Complete DITA and S1000D Support, Tools, Samples, and Documentation Available at No Charge in New Downloadable Application Packs

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Sept. 7, 2006 — Adobe Systems Incorporated (NASDAQ: ADBE) today made available as a public beta for the Windows® platform two new Application Packs for Adobe® FrameMaker® 7.2 software, Adobe’s enterprise-class authoring and publishing software. The two new beta Application Packs, available at no charge, provide enterprises and developers with complete support for the Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA) and S1000D specifications for creating technical publications, documentation, and other resources that significantly extend the XML authoring capabilities and standards supported by FrameMaker 7.2.

The new FrameMaker 7.2 beta Application Packs for DITA and S1000D enable customers and developers to harness FrameMaker 7.2 for authoring, publishing, and developing XML content using DITA and S1000D. DITA is an approved OASIS standard for topic-based authoring that builds content reuse into the authoring process. DITA defines an XML architecture for designing, writing, managing, and publishing information in print and on the web. The Technical Publications Specification Maintenance Group (TPSMG) manages S1000D, a specification traditionally used in defense and aviation that is designed to reduce unnecessary content rework and maintenance. S1000D is now a widely accepted XML-based specification for creating technical publications for complex processes and equipment.

“Many organizations either do not know where to start when evaluating and integrating XML, DITA, or S1000D into their technical publishing processes, or are paying a premium for DITA and S1000D support, evaluation, and training,” said Don Walker, senior director of product marketing and business development for Print and Classic Publishing at Adobe. “To make it easier and more cost-effective for enterprises to take advantage of XML authoring to streamline their technical publishing efforts, Adobe and its development partners are delivering out-of-the-box DITA and S1000D support for FrameMaker 7.2 as well as additional tools and resources.”

More than a dozen Adobe development partners and members of the Adobe Solutions Network contributed to the development of the FrameMaker 7.2 beta Application Packs for DITA and S1000D. S1000D experts iTP-X created the Application Pack for S1000D. Backspace Ink, Bright Path Solutions, Document Jones, Group Wellesley, Integrated Technologies, Leximation, Promptt, Publishing Smarter, Scriptorium Publishing, Text Structure Consulting, and Silicon Publishing created the Application Pack for DITA—all overseen and coordinated by Silicon Publishing. Independent consultants Tassos Anastasiou, Tobias Reif, and Andrea Sharp also contributed their technical publishing knowledge and skills to developing the new FrameMaker Application Packs.

“Adobe and its development partners assembled some of the best minds in the technical publishing industry to create the FrameMaker 7.2 Application Packs for DITA and S1000D,” said Don Day, chairman of the OASIS DITA Technical Committee. “Continuing its long history of strong support for industry standards, Adobe is once again demonstrating ongoing leadership within the XML content creation industry through the new Application Packs for FrameMaker 7.2.”

Blaze is the latest product under development from MadCap Software. Scheduled for release early 2007, Blaze will be the ideal solution for easily producing very long documents for print-such as books, manuals and illustrated guides-using the latest technological advances available. For years, authors have had to choose between ease of use (e.g., Microsoft® Word™) or the power to handle very large documents (e.g., Adobe® FrameMaker®). Now, with MadCap Blaze, authors have a complete package: ease of use, power to create long documents, flexibility, and an eye toward the future.

To receive early test versions and help shape Blaze – Sign up today.

Features Include:

XML Foundation. MadCap Blaze features a unique patent-pending visual XML editor, fully driven by schemas and cascading style sheets (CSS). However, no knowledge of XML is required in order to use Blaze.

Importing. Bring in documents from products such as Microsoft Word and FrameMaker. Blaze ensures that content and settings such as cross-references, variables, and autonumbering formats are kept intact. There is no need to worry about losing any of your work.

Single Sourcing to Multiple Outputs. Quickly produce output for a single document in a variety of formats, such as: straight to the printer, Microsoft’s new “Metro” format, Adobe PDF, Adobe FrameMaker, Microsoft Word.

Unicode Support Author content in numerous languages, such as French, German, Italian, Spanish, Swedish, and more.

CSS Support. Work smarter by using CSS when formatting content in Blaze. Creating, incorporating, and maintaining CSS files in Blaze is very easy and will save you hours of effort and time.

Conditional Text. Produce multiple versions of your content by using condition tags. For example, you can produce a beginner and advanced version of a manual without having to create two separate documents. Simply use condition tags in one document to indicate which content should be used in which manual.

Layouts. Create linked page layouts, which let you reuse content, graphics, headers, footers, multiple columns and page numbering throughout your documents. If you can dream it, you can probably do it in Blaze.

Variables and Snippets. Reuse content by creating pre-set terms (variables) and pre-set chunks of formatted content (snippets) and inserting them into various locations in your project.

Autonumbering. Incorporate customized automatic numbering in Blaze. Create numbered volumes, sections, paragraphs, and pages, which automatically change when you add or remove content.

Cross-References. Make full use of cross-references, which are “automated” links that let you connect one area of a document to another area.

Multiple Document Outlines. Quickly create and use as many different document outlines for as many different outputs or purposes as you want.

Powerful and Flexible Indexing System. Keep your document indexes current and consistent by using markers and the Index Explorer. Use Blaze’s Index Entry Mode to create index markers quickly.

Glossaries. Add professional glossaries to your documents. You can even automatically generate footnotes for your documents based on glossary terms and definitions.
