XML, FrameMaker and XML — Bright Path Solutions Workshops in Pittsburgh PA

Bright Path Solutions is offering special XML and FrameMaker/XML workshops in Pittsburgh PA. Classes will be held in July 2004. Workshop dates are as follows:

- Monday, July 26: A special one-day “XML Introduction” workshop This workshop is designed to explain the basics of XML, including now to create an XML instance. Students will create XML documents and open them in the browser. This workshop includes some discussions of XML-related technologies like XSL/XSLT.

- Tuesday, July 27 through Wednesday, July 28: A custom two-day “FrameMaker and XML” workshop This customized workshop is an accellerated and shortened version of our “Structured Document Publishing Boot Camp” and includes information on structured document authoring. Students will work in FrameMaker and in Notepad, turning XML into documents and documents into XML. The components of FrameMaker structured applications will be explored.

The latest news for the ISTC Annual Conference “Expanding Your Horizons” at the Oxford Belfry Hotel, 8-10th October.
Great News, the Society of Indexers will be presenting an Indexing workshop aiming at Technical Communicators who want to brush up their indexing skills. The workshop will be free to conference attendees, but places are limited so make sure you book your place now.
Julian Murfitt will be our keynote speaker. Julian has been involved in the ISTC for many years as well as building and running his successful and International business, Mekon.
Ron Blicq (former INTECOM president) and Alan Fisk (TCEurope secretary and ISTC Vice-President) will be sharing their experiences in novel and play writing.

Duties:

- Gather product information from Development, QA, Product Management, and Program Management.

- Develop, test, edit, and maintain user documentation for software products.

- Coordinate cross-functional document reviews to obtain feedback on technical accuracy and usability of documentation.

- Documentation sets include installation and user guides, technical reference manuals, and online help.

Qualifications:

Qualified candidates should possess a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, in either a technical discipline (computer science, engineering, etc.) or in a writing-related field, along with a minimum of five years of technical writing experience in a software development environment.

Candidates must have the following:

- Strong writing and editing skills
- Excellent time-management skills
- Ability to understand complex issues and transform them into accurate, user-friendly documentation
- Ability to understand software code
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, as required
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Effective communication skills and the ability to interact closely with Development, QA, Project Management, and Product Management
- Working knowledge of tools such as Adobe FrameMaker, RoboHelp, WebWorks, FrameScript, Illustrator, and Visio
- Experience with Javadoc
- Sense of humor

The ideal candidate will be thorough, detail-oriented, and self-motivated, and have experience developing FrameMaker templates, WebWorks templates (and macros), and Framescripts.

Experienced Print Production Editor with FrameMaker Expertise Needed

Production editor needed for a molecular modeling software
company (Schrödinger) in Portland, OR. Temporary, full-time work (3-4 weeks at a time) on three product
releases in 2004 and 2005, with annual releases thereafter. 2000+ page software manual set
(short to long books).

  • Must have at least 5 years experience producing print-ready files in
    FrameMaker
  • Must be able to work offsite on Windows, Mac or Unix platform
  • Must be careful, flexible, process- and detail-oriented, quick, and
    able to work independently
  • Some graphics (Photoshop and Illustrator) and copy-editing experience desirable
  • Experience converting books to new templates desirable
  • Local candidate preferred
  • One of two production editors (books must look consistent)
  • Portfolio required
