Velocity11 (Palo Alto, California) develops cutting-edge lab automation products for life-science research. We have a terrific opportunity for a technical writer, with a background in science, engineering, or computer science, who wants to create high-quality documentation in an informal atmosphere that fosters professional growth. This is a full-time regular position.Ideally, you will have:
–1–3 years of professional writing experience and a proven ability to write clear procedural documentation for customers
–A degree in science, engineering or computer science, and experience working in life-science laboratories
–The drive to investigate how technological products work and to craft explanations that anticipate customers’ questions and solve customers’ problems
–Basic competence with FrameMaker, Acrobat and graphics editing programs
–Knowledge of modular writing methods, such as Information Mapping
–Completed formal technical writing coursework
–Some experience with Web development or online help development
You will also have the flexibility needed to be effective in an informal, unstructured workplace, and the self-discipline to be productive without close daily supervision. You will possess the personal skills essential for success (such as communication, project-management and time-management skills), and the personal characteristics essential for success (such as honesty, reliability, desire for growth and a professional demeanor).
Job responsibilities will vary with experience and may include revising existing books, writing new books, updating book templates, creating online help, coordinating the work of an artist, editing, final production, and the development of departmental infrastructure.
